Eventually, we reached a building with a large storefront window. A sign above it read Sonny’s Souvenirs. A man, who I assumed was the store owner, ushered us in. Yuk set Noo down, and she immediately grabbed her father’s hand.

Inside, among the racks of clothes, scarves, jewelry, and trinkets, about a dozen people, Thai and foreign, had sought refuge. They sat on the muddied floor, huddled together in small groups, and spoke to one another in low voices. Based on the tone, they sounded to be words of comfort.

I slowly walked around the store, scanning the faces of everyone there. I peeked over the shoulders of people who were tending to others—men, women, and children with injuries lying on the ground or cradled in someone’s arms.

I made my way around the shop twice, checking every aisle, nook, and cranny, just to be sure. But the more I looked, the more my heart sank. Mom was not there.
